Applying for Medicare
Many of the people we speak to that are starting the Medicare journey have questions on the How, What, When, and Why’s.
At E-Advise Insurance we pride ourselves in making sure our clients clearly understand the aspects of Medicare and their options.
The first thing you need to know about Medicare is “How do I get it started?’
In many cases, your Medicare will start the first day of the month you turn 65. If your Birthday is on the 1st of the month; your Medicare will start on the 1st of the month, before your 65th birthday.
Your Medicare A and B will start Automatically if one of these 3 situations apply:

You are drawing Social Security benefits for at least 4 months before turning 65

You are disabled, you should get Medicare on the 1st day of the 25th month of Disability

You have Anthropic Lateral Sclerosis. (ALS – Lou Gehrig’s Disease) You will start your Medicare on the first month of disability benefits begin.
In all other cases, you must apply to start your Medicare.
If you do not take your Medicare when you are first able, there are a few other times when you can start it.

Special Enrollment Period – If upon turning 65 you remain group coverage through your, or your spouse’s employer you may not need to start your part B. If you, or your spouse remains employed you can apply to start your Medicare at any time you are still covered. You also have 8 months to start your Medicare once the coverage has ended.

General Enrollment Period – The General Enrollment Period runs from January 1st to March 31st. During this time, you can start your Medicare; keep in mind your coverage will not start immediately. Your coverage will start on July 1st.

If you are turning 65 within 3 months and you do not want to start your social security benefits yet, you can complete an online retirement application to sign up for Medicare only.
