How do I start Medicare
Many people get Original Medicare automatically when others must sign up. You may need to sign up If you are 65(Or turning 65) and not drawing social security yet.
Do I have Options
When starting Medicare you have 3 basic options.
1. Stay on Original Medicare with a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan
2. Opt for Medicare Part C, Medicare Advantage to handle your health coverage instead of Medicare
3. Stay with Original Medicare, Pick up a Medicare Supplement to fill the gaps, and a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan.
When Can I start my Medicare
You can't just wake up one day and decide. "Hey, I think I will start Medicare today." There are only certain times a year you can sign up. The most common is 3 months before, the month of, and up to 3 months after you turn 65 There are a few other times you can start your Medicare however this is the most common.
I can't afford it, is there any help I can receive.
Depending on your Income levels you could qualify for help paying for your Part B Premium, and/or Prescription costs and premiums.
Will I be Penalized If I do not start Medicare
The short answer is Yes, however it is not that simple. If you have coverage that is considered at least as good as Medicare's coverage a penalty will not apply.
